Project 3 : Date block Poster

Hello everyone! Finally I am here to update our final project for this module and it is a Date block Poster! Basically, what we have to do is pick any typeface that we are interested with. Then, we are to  write a brief introduction about the history, characteristics and the use the typeface and the intro have to be at most five sentences. After that, we have to insert the picture of the designer itself, letters , numbers from A to Z and 1 to 0 and finally the date block for the month and year of 2017.

Well, after making several research for my own, I decided to choose a serif typeface and it is Perpetua. Perpetual was designed by an English sculptor and stonemason, Eric Gill. Perpetua has the characteristics that features contrasts in the stroke width, crisp horizontal serifs, a delicate, harmonious colour on the page and a reasonably vertical axis. This typeface was commonly used for covers and headings and also sometimes for body text. Moreover, it was generally classified as a transitional serif font, in the vein of British fonts such as Baskerville from the late 18th century. After doing some research, ideations and exploring about this typeface, I was managed to get several inspirations from the internet to get a solid ideas on how my poster will look like. Here are some of the inspirations. :)

Some of the inspirations are taken because of the arrangement, the colour and the dynamic balance that I am searching for as Perpetua is a very well balanced typeface. Then , after doing so, I tend to illustrate and collect the infos about this typeface, then place it in the illustrator. Here are the progress of the poster.

Final Outcome
After some hard time choosing which poster I should have print and mounted into A2, I decided to print the first idea as I feel that the colour, arrangement and the picture of Eric Gill suits a lot. The colour resembles Perpetua itself a lot which is harmony, arrangement is yet simple and comforting for the eye and also the portrait of Eric Gill. The reason why it is designed into prismatic and cubic form is to resembles the era of cubism which was introduced again the the 1920s and that is the time Perpetua was born. Once again, here are the final outcome of the project.

I definitely learnt a lot from this project. I was managed to imply what I researched on towards my work, create a sense of space, balance and of course heighten my sensitivity towards tiny errors. I am sad but also glad that this module has come to an end and I am looking forward to have fun project again with Mr Ken for our upper semester!

Project 2 : Poster Event

For this very first project of this module, Typography, we were briefed and ought to create two sets of poster regarding the event "Typoscapes 2016" where the infos were all given by Mr Ken. Then, we are to free to design the posters in an A3 size paper, and both posters will be mounted on a A2 mounting board with any styles that we want but with the requirements of using only two fonts and and only two colours and most importantly , using the hierarchy sequence where we have to arrange the infos in order where it make sense and relevant . Sounds easy? Yes it is at first but when I started designing it in Illustrator, I can say that it was a little challenging but yet, a fun process as I progressed along the journey of completing these posters!
I know there is toned of infos to be squeezed in one paper and this is the time I use my skills of creative brainstorming to create an attractive, comfortable also, a relevant poster. Without wasting any time, I googled and pin up several ideas from other designers that are also designed a poster event and these are some of the inspiration I have found, followed up with my sketches for my design. Enjoy!

Sketches .

The reason why I chose  and create these designs that different sorts of positions and angles  is because I wanted to give the audience an impact of a movement and flow of rhythm where I believe it will attract and make the audience to take some amount of time to study it. Not only that, I also wanted to show the difference of the West and East because from the info given, where this event is attended by a variety of multiracial designers all around the world. It dis not give much of an impact but I belief as time goes, audiences will get it. When time goes, with no doubt I then started to design the poster in Adobe's Illustrator then were reviewed by Mr Ken for more improvements to be made. For instance, spacing, colour, details, angles, sense of composition and many more. Yes, all of this are minor to some people but to be a professional designer, we are forced to be sensitive to all of these aspects! Let's not waste any time and please enjoy how my progressions go until the finalised poster that I have chosen from these several designs! Enjoy!

Design 5

So these are the designs from scratch and after consulting Mr Ken, here are improved posters ( Not all of them are retouched and improved)

Design 1: Changing the composition of the info with orange-coloured text
Result : Not comfortable looking, uneasy to read, messy

Design 1: Playing with the tool of opacity, putting least important information below  changing the arrangement again and colour change.
Result: Easier to read, relevant, still need to improved as it is not clean- looking.

Design 1 : Change of the background colour with the colour of gray, adding shapes which is triangles with different opacity, align all the last information in one line, change the colour of "Typoscpaes 2016"
Results : Works well with lighter version of background, arranging wise still need to be fixed, arrangement of triangles are poor, opacity skills needed to be given some attention.

Design 2 : Arrangement is improved which is spacing, added a big type face of "T" at the bottom to enhance and attract some attention.
Result: Dull in colour, did not give any major impact, design is discontinued.

Design 3: Improved of design by making the arrangement a little more minimal, improved of compositions of the infos, reducing the shapes that is used.
Result : Still need to be improved in terms of the composition, too messy, has no sense of direction, colour is too dull, spacing is not that impressive and so does angles.

Design 4:  Change of colours, shapes are added to give the feeling of variety
Result: Sense of spacing is weak, colour choice is not comforting, arrangement is confusing for the eye.

Finalised Poster!

Design 1 : Arrangement, spacing, composition and Italic typefaces is improved and used
Result : Comfy looking, well arranged and yet simple looking.

Design 4: Change of colour of the background, shapes are improved and added with more variety, spacing is improved typeface is changed.
Result: Poster looking approved with a simple twist.

Design 3 : Change of background colour, typefaces and opacity, and angle.
Result: Simple design with better sense of direction

Design 5: Improved of composition and angles, colours and adding of shapes
Result: Easier to be read, better composition wise.

After several finalised poster, these are two poster that I chose to be printed and mounted on a mounting board.

Project 1 : Nursery Rhyme

Hello everyone! I'm Jason and I am from the BGCD semester 1 batch all the way from Taylor's University! From this course we are ought to have a fun and interesting module called "Typography" and what we learn from this module is all about typefaces, simple rules and many more I can't count! So, after weeks from attending this class, we are given and briefed from our lecturer which is Mr Ken about our very first project which is creating a nursery rhyme book. Not just a normal book, but a nursery rhyme book that is contained with eight pages that is in the version of a concertina.

From the brief, we are to choose any nursery rhyme that most importantly, in the language of English,  choices of colour is only 2 not including white because it is the colour of the paper itself, unlimited choices of typefaces and also creating images, shapes and other decorative borders with only letters. At first, it may sound hard for most of us but actually, it wasn't as hard as it seems because I was managed to experiment with a lot of new learning skills that I haver never learnt before.

After searching with a variety of nursery rhymes, I finally chose one that is interesting for me which is "Peter Peter, Pumpkin Eater" and below are the picture of how the nursery rhyme sounded like.

Nursery Rhyme

After that, I did several research on how does normally a nursery rhyme book will look like and also how does a concertina book works with the nursery rhyme book as well as my inspirations for my book that I am about to design. These are the photos of inspiration I have searched for.

As I browse through, I realised that most of the nursery rhymes will be in either a serif or a san serif typefaces and decorative typefaces are hardly found in these books because it would be hard for the audience to read decorative typeface as these books are meant for only kids. Not long after, I drew several sketches on how the composition of the nursery rhyme will look like and also several sketches for the images that are only used with letters, numbers and only symbols to make the book a little more attractive.

 Progression
After sketching those ideas and composition I have in my mind, I then transferred it into illustrator and then progress it from time to time until it is completed and printed. I hope you enjoyed it!

After few progression I have done, I then printed it and then make these design in a concertina book.

I then make several corrections after asking opinions from my friends on how to make it into a better version of the book as well.

Corrections

After this project, I was managed to understand more on how to create designs that is suitable to age preferences based on the target audience which is children from now. I was managed to handle typefaces even more better than before after listening to mr Ken's and my friends' advices and opinions towards my artwork. Till then, I hope to have more exciting upcoming project soon!!
